10. The End Of Alice

Tumblr Mvrwizakhe1rosdp8o1 500 Gif When I picked up this book, I wrongly assumed it would merely be a generic account of child abuse, but what I soon found was something incredibly disturbing. The unnamed 19-year-old girl at the centre of the novel likes to pick scabs from the knees of young boys, she wants to taste their flesh and to seduce teens several years younger than herself. Although not conventionally scary, The End of Alice is a frighteningly realistic account of the mind of a pedophile and child killer. Written by A.M.Holmes in 1996, The End of Alice is narrated by a middle-aged man who is currently serving a life sentence for killing a child. Whilst doing his time in prison he begins to receive letters from a 19-year-old girl who is planning on seducing a 12-year-old boy and gives her tips on how to get exactly what she wants from the boy. The novel is somewhat reminiscent of Vladimir Nabokov's novel, Lolita however The End of Alice is much more graphic and is a chilling portrayal of an extremely disturbed mind. Unlike many of the books on this list, The End of Alice consists not of horror or supernatural beings but of a seemingly normal suburban neighborhood which slowly reveals the sickening kind of impulses that may be hidden anywhere in our societies. The End of Alice is more disturbing than it is scary but it will certainly play on your mind long after you have finished it.
