10 Awesome Temporary Power Upgrades Received By Comic Book Characters

9. The Lantern Reserves (Power Rings)

lanterns The Blackest Night storyline was first mentioned at the conclusion of the "Sinestro Corps War" in Green Lantern volume 4, #25. As the war between the Green Lantern and Sinestro Corps reached its climax, the four Green Lanterns of Earth - Kyle Rayner, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner and John Stewart - were told by the Guardians Ganthet and Sayd of the Blackest Night prophecy. According to this prophecy, the two existing Corps at the time - green (Green Lanterns) and yellow (Sinestro Corps) - would be joined by five new ones, each driven by a specific emotion and empowered by a specific colour of the emotional spectrum, leading to a "War of Light" that would subsequently destroy the universe. When Blackest Night gets underway, two Green Lanterns - Ash and Saarek - find and touch the Black Central Power Battery, which activates it and sets in to motion a series of events that sends black rings to corpses, the undead and those who had experienced death all around the universe, empowering them with the black power of death (giving the recipients of the rings most - though not all - of the powers of a Green Lantern, but with the added bonus of being incredibly hard to kill thanks to a regenerative healing factor, as well as making them evil, regardless of their alignment prior to receiving their rings). When Green Lantern John Stewart warns the heroes of Earth that every Black Lantern in the universe is heading for their planet, fellow Corps member Hal Jordan says they need all of the seven Corps to unite to produce the white light of life which can defeat them. While they summon the seven Corps to Earth, Ganthet duplicates the seven coloured rings present and makes deputy Lanterns of non-Corps members Ganthet (as a Green Lantern), Barry Allen (as a Blue Lantern), Mera (as a Red Lantern), Lex Luthor (as an Orange Lantern), Scarecrow (as a Yellow Lantern), Atom (as an Indigo Lantern) and Wonder Woman (as a Violet Lantern, after separating her from a black ring that had caused her to become a Black Lantern). In some of these cases (such as Scarecrow), this was a hell of a lot more power than they had ever experienced before. In other cases (such as Wonder Woman), it was a nice addition to an already formidable powerset. Regardless, whatever their previous power level was, this was one hell of an upgrade for them all - and a very necessary one, given the dire state of the universe upon their receiving of it.
