9. Gamora Lets Magus Go - Thanos (Vol. 3) #6

House of X X-Men Return
Marvel Comics

Life for Thanos' adopted daughter and long-suffering ward, Gamora, has never been easy - as even after she broke free of the cruel control of her father, she still found herself motivated by the same rage and desire for revenge that he had instilled in her in the first place.

As such, the end of the third volume of Thanos is perhaps one of the most pivotal points in her character arc, as, after years of being told and trained to believe that the powerful reincarnating Magus should be killed at all costs, Gamora finds him, and then lets him go.

Though the ghost of Thanos mocks her for sending Magus off instead of raising him, Gamora makes a convincing argument, saying that she'd only repeat the bad lessons the Mad Titan taught her, whereas in this case, the reborn child can finally break the cycle of death and terrible parenting.

While many people consider Thanos' death the point at which Gamora gains closure, this moment actually feels far more cathartic for the character. It's also an undeniably powerful message to anyone who feels their past still defines them, and that their trauma is too great to ever heal, by telling them that it's never too late to overcome their past's shadow.
