10 Best Comic First Issues This Week (Dec 26, 2018)

9. Star's End #1

Superior Spider Man #1 2019
Antarctic Press

A small team are sent to scan a planet and make sure it's cleared of poisonous gas before the fleet arrives, but when they land, a mystery begins to unravel that maybe it wasn't simple gas that wiped out the population. The only way they can get answers is with the sole survivor - a human.

The future looked at in Star's End is interesting because anthropomorphic animals are the dominant force in the universe, with humans acting as a slave class. However, the real focus is on introduction to the crew and laying a framework to their roles and interplay which gets us invested when the mystery explodes with rabid humans begin attacking the ship. That isn't to say there aren't hiccups in this issue given that there's a betrayal towards the end which could have worked much better in a second issue after we've at least gotten a grasp of the status quo.

The art is a give and take. While there are certainly better looking indie books starring animals, the semi-cartoonish style allows for a dimension of fun to the book that keeps an overall enjoyable tone making this an entertaining read.
