9. Halo: Lone Wolf #1

Wolverine Long Night
Dark Horse Comics

Linda-058 is a Spartan sniper, sent to a remote planet to kill a human traitor among a group of survivors. Rather than coming out and joining the group, Linda stays hidden to best be left alone to do her mission when the opportunity arises.

In the Halo universe, Master Chief is supreme, but tie-in materials like this allow for other Spartans to be in the spotlight and really give a sense of scale to the Human-Covenant War as well as tell smaller stories away from the more epic plots of the main entries in the video game franchise.

Linda-058 could easily be a fairly boring character since her stoic and detached nature may be why she was chosen for the mission, but that in itself is quite cliched. Anne Toole expands upon that by having most of Linda's interactions be with the squad AI, Athos. The only time she doesn't is during a training simulation with her team at the beginning.

The writing is good enough to make Linda an interesting character, and one worth following, while the art is to a good standard, though sometimes the cutting in between Linda and the survivors gives a strange pacing to the action scenes. All in all, it isn't too shabby, even for readers who may dislike Halo.
