10 Comic Announcements From Comic-Con 2014 You Need To Know‏

It's not all just Hollywood blockbusters there y'know.

San Diego Comic-Con was full of exciting news for the upcoming year in films, TV shows and video games. That's what the annual four-day convention has morphed into at this point - a proving ground for Hollywood studios and the entertainment industry as a whole to show off their new products to rooms full of adoring fans, ensuring some positive coverage or else allowing them to gauge the reaction of their target audience first hand. This year the majority of the SDCC write ups were about Batman V Superman, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and a new King Kong movie that hopefully won't be a billion hours long (not an exaggeration). Amongst all the excitement it's possible to lose sight of the fact that this is, first and foremost, a comic book convention. It is kinda in the title of thing, after all. So whilst DC and Marvel did spend a lot of time hawking their big and small screen wares they also found the time - alongside some other comic publishers - to unveil some info about what they've got cooking in their funnybooks. In fact this year the Hollywood presence was dialled back a little, so that superheroes and caped crusaders could dominate once again. Also: giant talking rabbits. Don't worry, it'll all make sense if you read on and learn about the ten comic announcements from San Diego you need to know.

10. Orphan Black Spin-Off From IDW

We're pretty big fans of the BBC America's breakout sci-fi show here at WhatCulture and, if you're not already, you should be to. It actually feels very comic book-like; besides the obvious comparisons to other female-lead genre shows, especially with intricate conspiracies at the heart of them (Buffy, X-Files, Alias etc) the way that it's structured, the ensemble cast, the shifting perspectives and the long-form storytelling. And the fact that it's chocka with clones - Spider-Man fans, please don't let that dissuade you. Not every Clone Saga is terrible. We promise! The basic premise of Orphan Black is that Sarah Manning, a down-and-out con artist, sees a woman kill herself at a train station. Which would be distressing enough, were that woman not her doppelganger, whose identity Sarah steals which sets in motion a grand, overarching plot that involves multiple clones, corporate espionage, transhumanism and dancing. The second season just finished its run, with the revelations and twist pertaining to Sarah and her genetically created twins coming thick and fast. We can't wait to see what they come up with next season. Or we might not have to wait, since IDW announced at San Diego they will be launching a comic book spin-off of the show, telling new stories in the universe which - presumably - will work in concert with the plot developments on screen. They failed to mention the creative team on the comic and put a release date vaguely at some point in early 2015, but we're excited! And hopeful that they manage to have it all make sense. And don't steal work from the phenomenally talented Tatiana Maslany.
