10 Comics Villains Who Had The Best Debuts

9. Loki

Joker First Appearance HQ
Marvel Comics

Loki has been a pain in Thor's side for the past sixty-seven years, ever since he first crawled from the minds of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Larry Lieber.

Billed as Thor's sworn enemy, there is no mention of him being his adopted brother, and so the two Gods of Asgard battle each other in the streets of New York, as Loki tries to take possession of Mjölnir. Using his magic (as well as pushing people in front of subway trains), the eternal trickster pulls out all the stops in his eternal quest to defeat the Thunder God.

However, once he's been defeated, he's sent back to Asgard to pay for his crimes.

This classic creation had already surfaced in Venus #6 in 1949 but it was an entirely different looking Loki, with no connection to Thor, and it wouldn't be until 1952 that the now-familiar green and gold outfit and pointy horned hat would make its first appearance,. Thus setting in stone one of Marvel's most iconic rivalries.

It's one that has spanned all forms of media and, thanks to the success of the films, it is a relationship that will seemingly go on forever.
