Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch created DC’s Apollo, and gave him his first appearance in Stormwatch #4, first published in 1998.

Departing almost entirely from the origins of the classical Apollo, he is depicted as a costumed superhero figure in these modern stories, with abilities fuelled by solar power. He happens to be one of the earliest homosexual superheroes, married to vigilante Midnighter.

The Apollo of Greek myth carries a silver and gold bow with silver arrows, and is the son of Zeus, recognised as an important figure to ancient Greeks. He is said to be god of many things, to name a mere few, archery, healing, and poetry. While depicted as god of healing, like all Greek gods he has a duality of temperament, thus also bringing illness if inclined.

Apollo, depicted as the ideal picture of youth himself, oversees the guidance of the young through education into adulthood. He is also described as a protector of livestock, and sources of agriculture.
