It's a brand new year and there has never been a better time to pick up a comic. The last decade has brought a huge new audience to the medium with blockbuster movies and incredible TV shows. But it's not just superheroes in the spotlight. There are more creator-owned indie books than ever, offering an escape from the big action of the big two publishers and presenting more grounded and emotional stories.

2020 already looks to be jam packed with brilliant titles. Marvel are leading the charge with new runs on Hawkeye and Star Wars starting on New Year's Day; DC are preparing to handle the fallout of Superman revealing his identity and celebrate the 750th issue of Wonder Woman this January, and indie publishers are also set for a big year, as more and more big name writers are showing an interest in telling new, creator-owned stories.

There's such a wide range of titles to be found and comic books are more accessible than ever. That said, it's hard to know where to begin with so much to choose from. So, with that in mind, here are just a few of the exciting new runs coming to your local comic book store soon!

The Odinson has come out of the last decade as one of the most popular comic book characters there is, but in the comics Thor has seen some big design changes since his introduction to the MCU. Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman presided over a lauded run on Thor along with other artists, but when it was announced that Donny Cates (Venom, Guardians Of The Galaxy) was taking over as writer, the news worried some newer fans.

Following on from Aaron's seven year run, the Guardians of the Galaxy writer has a tough task in telling Thor's story now the Ten Realms are finally at peace, but if anyone can take on that challenge, it's Cates. The solicitations for issues #1 to #3 are currently available and this run is already looking jam packed with action, featuring the return of Beta Ray Bill, big stories for Sif and a whole new threat - dubbed 'The Black Winter' - ready to descend on Asgard and challenge the now King.

Speaking to CBR, Cates has said he wants his run "to sound like Norwegian Black Metal", and when looking at the new look Nic Klein has given The God of Thunder, that makes a lot of sense. Klein has created a darker looking design that wouldn't look out of place wandering the dark forests of Norway.
