10 Greatest Comic Book Super-Villains

10. Plutonian

Plutonian Mark Waid's Irredeemable has a fantastic premise €“ what if Superman one day snapped and went crazy? That's just what happens to Plutonian (Waid's version of Superman) whose mind is unable to handle the stress and slights against him anymore and just decides to start killing anyone and everyone. After years of being the good guy, he's going to become the worst bad guy ever! After all, he's the most powerful being on the planet, who could stop him doing whatever he wanted? There have been many books over the years that have asked the question of what would happen if Superman went bad, but Waid's superhero horror story goes to some really dark places no previous Superman comic has ever explored. Plutonian commits genocide, wiping out entire countries as revenge for years of unrewarding work saving ungrateful peoples' lives. But rather than being a simple good guy turned bad story, Waid gives the character real depth and an air of tragedy. Plutonian's troubled childhood and his desire for love and inability to find it, all fuel his insanity and vengeful actions against a world that demanded he be their protector but never accepted him for who he was, treating him more like a guard dog rather than a real person. The series follows Waid's version of the Justice League as they attempt to find a way of defeating Plutonian while being picked off by him one at a time. The series loses steam towards the end with a polarising finale but the first few books in the series are undeniably excellent, enveloped in a palpable sense of doom. Waid's Plutonian is one seriously scary dude.
