10 Iconic Comic Book Moments Erased By Stupid Retcons

Spiderman Gwen Comic books are very circular. With decades of continuity under their belt, and a need to preserve a basic status quo, that means any comic story is ripe for a retcon. And nothing is safe, either. Some of the most iconic events, the ones people remember as extremely shocking and defining moments in the lives of these characters, have been rendered obsolete by the stroke of a writer€™s pen or an editorial decree. Sometimes, it just comes down to smart marketing. It wouldn€™t be very smart cross-promotion to have someone other than Peter Parker as Spider-Man or a different Batman than Bruce Wayne during a time when those characters have movies coming out. Other times, it€™s because a writer or an editor has a fond memory of the way the comics were when they were fans and wants to return to that. And there are also times when it just comes down to plain pettiness or arrogance€”a new writer or editor feels that what was done in the past shouldn€™t have happened to begin with and seeks to undo it. Or the worst retcon of all, when it€™s done for nothing more than a shock tactic. Here are ten retcons from Marvel and DC that have rendered some of the most iconic comic book moments moot. Whether or not these retcons eventually turned out to be positive or negative is a different story, though. Click "next" below to get started...
