Injustice: Gods Among Us was a video game series created by Mortal Kombat developers NetherRealm studios in 2013. A sequel followed a couple of years later, while in between a comic released that - in pretty much every way imaginable - managed to floor readers completely.

Most comics designed to capitalise on video games don't tend to do all that well, but Tom Taylor found something special when he kickstarted the Injustice spin-off comics the same year the first game released. It was emotionally wrought, devastating and compelling in equal measure, showcasing how DC's heroes navigated such a soul-destroying universe.

For those who don't know, Injustice takes place in a world where Superman is manipulated into killing Lois Lane and her unborn child by the Joker. The Clown Prince then wipes Metropolis off the face of the Earth with a bomb, prompting Superman to lose his head completely, murder the Batman villain, and kickstart a dictatorship of his own. (Think the Justice Lords, only much, much worse.)

The disturbing nature of this reality is exemplified by who decides to help Superman fashion this new world order, with Hal being one of them. He uses a yellow power ring, murders Guy Gardner, and works with the Regime for years. He eventually turns good, but there's something horrifying and all too real about a Green Lantern abusing their power and succumbing to their worst temptations.
