Anyone who knows anything about the X-Men knows that mutants are hated, hunted and sometimes killed if humans are given the chance. People trying to destroy what they don't understand is a common thread in the Marvel Universe, especially when it comes to people with the X-Gene. So what would happen if roles were reversed and it was the mutants who were in charge of the planet and the humans were the ones who were looked down upon?

That's basically the plot of House of M, which is a fantastic stepping stone into the modern day Marvel Universe. We see mutants having the sort of power many of them could only dream of, which makes it interesting to see how their roles in society change along with their personalities.

Not only is this a great standalone series that takes an interesting look at society and how those in power use it to hold other people down, as I mentioned before, it's also a great place to start if you want to get into the more up-to-date stories happening in the X-Men universe.
