Out of all the mutants who have been members of the X-Men over the team's fifty-year-plus history, none of them have managed to prove as popular as Wolverine. Not only did he get his own solo comic due to that popularity, but he's even had multiple solo series running concurrently, a kind of success matched by only a few top-tier characters, such as Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man.
For better or worse, he's also been the central character in nearly all the X-Men movies. The Ol' Canucklehead has even broken outside of the confines of the mutant side of the Marvel Universe and has gone on to be a member of the Avengers at the same time he was running with the X-Men. Not bad for a guy who originally started out as a one-off foe for the Hulk, and was initially over-shadowed by the other X-Men to the point where there were discussions of dropping him from the roster.
