You either die as Robin, or you live long enough to see yourself become Nightwing.

Even those who never picked up a comic book in their life know how important Robin is to Batman. They have arguably become a more iconic duo than peanut butter & jelly, Scooby Doo & Shaggy, and Kim & Kanye. However, all good things must come to an end, especially when a new hero emerges from it. That's exactly what happened when Dick Grayson quit his job as The Boy Wonder to don the black & blue as Nightwing.

Many DC Comics fans probably first became familiar with Dick Grayson's solo gig through its depiction in The New Adventures of Batman and Robin. More recently, his exposure has transcended into DC Animated Movies such as Batman: Bad Blood and video games such as Injustice: Gods Among Us. These, as well as several other appearances, have cemented Dick Grayson's popularity in arguably greater fashions than his time as Robin ever did.

With all the exposure he's gotten, he has certainly deserved his own "10 Things You Didn't Know About" list, just as he's earned his position within the DC Universe...

10. His Existence Is The Result Of Creative Differences

You may have known the story as to how Dick Grayson became Nightwing, but not many fans have heard the behind-the scenes reason for the change.

Around 1982, Dick Grayson became a popular character in his own right as the leader of the Teen Titans. The writers behind Teen Titans at the time, Marv Wolfman and George Perez, made Dick Grayson grow a few years in age and maturity, making him smarter and less "punny" than his younger self.

While this character development granted him tremendous fan support, it caused friction within the corporate offices of DC Comics. Those who wrote the Batman titles desperately wanted Robin back but couldn't tamper with the continuity established by Wolfman and Perez. The Teen Titans writers weren't even close to budging, either.

So to compromise, Wolfman proposed that he would change Dick Grayson's superhero name to something else so that a new character could take up the mantle of Robin in his place.

This decision gave birth to not only the Nightwing persona but also to Jason Todd.
