10 Times That Avengers Died (And Subsequently Required Avenging)

7. Thor - Fear Itself

Death Of Avengers
Marvel

'Fear Itself' was an odd Marvel event. It saw Bucky Barnes sacrificing himself (yet not really, he just kind of became a new version of the 'Man on the Wall'), a host of power granting hammers descend to Earth, and a Deadpool tie-in that saw Christopher Hastings (the writer for Dr McNinja, which is friggin' brilliant by the bye) join the Marvel writing roster.

Another big event was the end of everyone's favourite Norse god. No, not Loki; Thor. The whole thing kicked off back in World War II when Adolf Hitler commanded the Red Skull to perform a ritual that summons the Hammer of Skadi. What a scamp, eh? The Red Skull couldn't pick up the hammer so he ordered it to be sectioned off. Skip to modern day and the Red Skull's daughter, Sin, finds it and the plot rolls on from there.

In Norse mythology, Skadi is a giantess god usually associated with snow and (oddly) skiing. In Marvel's Norse mythology she's the daughter of this event's big bad; The Serpent. It's whilst battling this enemy that Cap'n 'merica's vibranium shield breaks, so Iron Man begs Odin for his help, to allow him to make weapons out of uru (the metal Mjolnir is made out of) for the Avengers.

Either way, these aren't up to scratch so Thor has to give his life to take out The Serpent. So he truly goes out like an Avenger; that is to say, he avenges himself.
