10 Most Tragic Deaths In X-Men History

10. Moira MacTaggert

When the Legacy Virus started killing mutants on the island of Genosha, including Colossus€™ sister Illyana Rasputin, Moira Mactaggert worked to manufacture a cure for the disease at her research lab on Muir Island. However, her research took a surprising turn when she was learned that she was the only human that had caught the disease. Whether this was due to her prolonged exposure to the Genoshan mutants or because she had given birth to a mutant earlier in life was unclear, but she never gave up and continued to study the disease even under quarantine. Her work eventually paid off when she synthesized a cure, but her victory was short-lived when the shape-shifting Mystique manipulated the research so that the disease would only attack humans. Mystique and her allies proceeded to destroy Muir Island and mortally wound Moira. Although the X-Men did everything they could to save her, Moira was too badly hurt, and in her last moments of life, she mentally transferred her research on the virus to Professor Xavier, both her former lover and one of her dearest friends. Beast was able to use this information to synthesize an antidote, and although it was released to cure all the affected mutants, another mutant€™s life was lost in the process. Moira was not only one of the X-Men€™s closest allies, but an expert in genetics and mutants affairs. She worked with Charles Xavier and his allies to create a future where mutants and humans could coexist peacefully, so to have her life ended by a mutant has a cruel irony to it, and the pay-off of her work creating a cure is also a seriously tragic kicker. All she was ever trying to do was help others, and she was killed for it.
