How many Jokers are too many?

We've seen countless depictions of Batman's arch-nemesis across film, television, comic books and video games, and the same goes for other iconic Dark Knight foes like Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman.

While at least one of these legendary baddies will probably end up appearing in The Batman - in a deconstructed form, let's hope - they need to be accompanied by a villain we've never seen before on the big screen.

Arkham Asylum's network of cells is a largely untapped treasure trove of compelling rogues for filmmakers to draw inspiration from.

Retaining the services of Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke would be a smart move, since the lethal hitman has proven Batman's physical and intellectual equal on a number of occasions, and cinemagoers have never been acquainted with him.

Other Batman foes who deserve a cinematic debut include Hugo Strange, Hush and Black Mask - three characters who could be adapted in a grounded way.

The Batman should avoid retreading old ground as much as possible, and introducing an all-new villain would be a good place to start.
