Action Comics #700 contained a story by Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer which caused a great deal of controversy at the time. The Incident features Superman - an iconic American hero known for fighting for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" - deciding to take a stand against American foreign policy by renouncing his American citizenship and becoming a hero for the entire world rather than just the United States. Fox News claimed that the story belittled the country, and the backlash from the press led to DC Comics announcing that it was actually just a standalone tale which wouldn't be followed up on.
