5 Awesome Comics You Must Read This Week (9 October)

4. Chew #37 By John Layman And Rob Guillory (Image)

Chew 37 Cover A1 461x700 This is the second part of Family Recipes, the eighth volume in the Chew series from creators John Layman and Rob Guillory. This issue sees Tony and his daughter Olive sit down to maybe the most awkward dinner a father and daughter have ever had to sit through - each one eating the severed toes of deceased family members! Tony munches on his dead sister Toni's toe which brings Toni back for one more issue (yay!) as a kind of Jedi ghost. He then gets drawn into a revenge plot by his brother Chow, a famous chef and restaurateur, who has been cheated by another food freak, this time someone whose pictures of food elicit sexual feelings in the viewer. Meanwhile Colby visits Savoy in an FDA Supermax prison - Savoy looking like a much larger version of Hannibal Lector with his mouthpiece - as the two begin to enact their plan together. Guillory's art is wonderful as usual and he and Layman are in sync with their humour, Guillory peppering the panels with little jokes scrawled over everything, while Layman's stories of bizarre foodies are as amusing as ever. One of the best scenes in the issue is Tony and Chow sharing an awkward bro-hug that's hilarious. 37 issues in and Chew continues to be one of the most original and consistently high quality comics being produced. Check it out, it's amazing!
