By Odin’s beard, isn’t the MCU something? Twenty films, seventeen billion dollars, three phases, and one Korg later and Disney holds the key to the biggest film franchise ever. With any cinematic behemoth so mighty, there are bound to be a few unwieldy moments that slip past the bonds of reason and kind of make no sense. Despite near-universal acclaim, eagle eyed fans have pointed out various issues, plot holes and mysteries from the films that have seemingly never been addressed, leaving gaping holes in the continuity and lapses in logic.

However, fun though it always is to criticise, sometimes these moments weren’t forgotten, they were simply explained outside of the films. Ever since the first Iron Man film there has been a run of MCU tie-in comics that explain details all around the films. Be it that they explain just how a certain Infinity Stone got into certain hands, or what ever happened to a big villain teased in the early days of the MCU we never heard from again, these mysteries became mysteries no longer.

Prepare for some knowledge folks, as we turn to the musty pages of the MCU canon comic books to find answers to some of the greatest MCU mysteries.

5. How Did Hydra End Up With The Sceptre In Avengers: Age Of Ultron?

So, a fair few people were justifiably confused at the start of Age of Ultron, which saw The Avengers on a mission to recover Loki’s sceptre. The confusing part is that we had assumed S.H.I.E.L.D had recovered the Sceptre after the battle of New York, surely they wouldn’t be dumb enough to just leave an immensely powerful artifact on top of Stark Tower for anyone to take?

Well, this little plot hole was answered in Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron Prelude - This Sceptred Isle. Actually, they did recover the sceptre, and it was held by S.H.I.E.L.D. However, the scientist in charge of investigating the sceptre’s powers, Mark Smith, abhors his position in S.H.I.E.L.D, and betrays them to Hydra, taking the sceptre and killing fellow scientist Nicholas Cooper in the process.

From there, Smith hands the sceptre over to Hydra in war torn Sokovia, who begin testing its powers on two young volunteers: Pietro and Wanda Maximoff. This then leads to the birth of Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch, and the assault on Hydra's base at the beginning of Age of Ultron.
