6 Drastic Comic Book Changes That Won't Stick

3. Bunny-Eared Batman

Drastic costume changes occur all the time in comics. Most often, it's to symbolise a new outlook or direction for a character after a significant life-changing event. Likewise, heroes often take on new names or pass on their titles to others, the most obvious example being the dozen or so different characters to take on the role of Robin. So when images of the 'new' Batman started to surface, there was any number of ways it could have gone. Was Bruce Wayne trying out a new look? Was it a former Robin stepping into the role of an absent Batman? Was the Easter Bunny taking up crime fighting? The Joker recently returned to DC comics after his apparent death at the conclusion of 2012's Death Of The Family arc. Not only had he returned from the dead, but he claimed to be immortal to boot. Although Batman managed to defeat the Joker during a battle in some underground caves, the resulting cave-in killed both hero and villain. With Batman dead, Commissioner Gordon is set to take on the mantle of a new, more heavily armored, costume. Add to this the line-wide shake up promised with the conclusion of Convergence, and it's a safe bet that there are going to be some changes in both tone and character for the Batman books. But, as often as characters get new looks, they return to their old formula. Most of the best known comic book characters have standard costumes that have become iconic over the years, and although minor changes come and go, they almost inevitably return to their most iconic and recognisable appearance. And with Superman vs Batman only a few months away, DC are going to want one of their biggest properties to be as recognizable as possible in order to cash in on potential new readers. With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
