8 Comic Book Characters Who Broke The Joker

8. Catwoman - The Wedding

Although many felt that 'The Wedding' ended in an anticlimax when Batman and Catwoman failed to tie the knot in Batman #50, the previous issue, which concluded the Joker's plan to scupper the pair's special day, was pretty spectacular.

After dispatching Batman and shooting Catwoman, the feline femme-fatale manages to claw Joker's throat. The rest of the issue focuses on the two bleeding out on some rubble; Selina from her gunshot wounds, Joker from his severed neck. A dialogue then follows, and it's here where the best aspects of Tom King's writing shines through.

It could be their last moments, and they spend it debating Batman. Both reflect on their time as super-criminals, and argue over who really knows the Dark Knight between them. Joker argues that it's him, while Selina claims otherwise. Both have their reasons, and King nails both of their histories with Batman succinctly and superbly, but it's Selina who prevails. She tells Joker a joke, the Clown Prince decides to reload his weapon - letting go of his neck in the process - and drops dead, prompting Catwoman to laugh at the entire exchange.

It's all classic Joker, but there's no denying Catwoman got the upper-hand - even if it was Joker's monologue that partially inspired Selina to leave Bats at the altar.
