9 Comics You Should Be Reading This Week (18th Oct)

The best of last week's pulp...

Harley Quinn Suicide Squad 4
DC Comics

Wednesday is #NewComicDay and there are a lot of comics out there! If money’s scare, let me help you to spend yours wisely and kick back with great stories this weekend.

No spoilers, just highlights...

The 'Big Two' have been on form this week but there are a few issues from other publishers that really stand out from the crowd. There's a new release from Mark Millar and Greg Capullo that definitely lives up to the hype. As well as the long-awaited second "American Vampire" anthology, which has a roster of creators you could take as a "Who To Follow" in the comics industry. Not to mention an issue from Avatar that contains some of Alan Moore's few remaining comics pages he has left before he retires.

For the past few months, DC has been dominating with their "Rebirth" series but, looking at this 'Top Pick' for the week, you can see that there are a lot of newer comics that are at the forefront of the industry both in terms of quality of storytelling and innovation.

Needless to say, this week is a good week to read comics...

9. American Vampire Anthology #2

Harley Quinn Suicide Squad 4
Vertigo Comics

Vertigo, Multiple Writers And Artists (Created By Scott Snyder And Rafael Albuquerque)

Worth Reading For: The Sheer Weight of Creative Talent.

The long-awaited sequel to the first star-studded anthology has finally arrived and it does not disappoint. There are two stories by the 21st century’s ‘Saviour of Vampirism’ Scott Snyder and they set the tone for this time-and-space-crossing anthology of short stories.

The whole thing reads as a ‘how to write short comics’ and, unsurprisingly, ‘hot to write vampire stories.’ With other creators such as Kieron Gillen (“The Wicked + The Divine”) Marguerite Bennett (“DC Bombshells”) and even features a story written by “American Vampire” co-creator Rafael Albuquerque.

It’s over seventy pages of masterful writing and artwork and it’s definitely worth your time and money.

A. J. S. Scott was created as a homunculus by a mad English Alchemist who was trying to make rum from ink and seawater. He is still a fan of both and he has no comment on what happened to all the ‘No Exit’ signs in Islington Underground Station when he visited for Beltaine.
