Doom Patrol: 10 Things Every Fan Needs To Know

Green Lanterns and Dada and bricks, oh my!

Perhaps the only flaw of Doom Patrol is that – as a comic series – it's not the easiest to get into. The two most recent versions of the comic reference the original in ways that could be confusing for a new reader, and for people who aren’t fans of old fashioned comics, dragging through the 121 issues that make up the original storyline probably isn’t an ideal way to spend a weekend.

This is the exact reason that the show adaption is nothing short of condensed genius. Doom Patrol is one of the most unique titles that DC has, and it’s also one of the most underused, which leaves it in prime position to provide a novel and interesting title to the stage.

However, with it being such an unusual kind of superhero series, there’s a lot that needs to be said in order to go into the show knowing all you need to know. Between tone, characters, and men made out of scissors, here are some notes to help you enjoy the show as much as it deserves to be enjoyed.

10. It's As Meta As They Come

The first thing that needs to be kept in mind when watching the series is that Doom Patrol is going to be as meta as is possible without sabotaging the plot. The comic series is careful to play with any expectations you may have about superhero comics, and from some of the jokes in the first episode, it’s clear the show plans to follow suit.

Given the other considerably meta superhero franchise right now is the highly successful Deadpool series, there's reason to be confident that this will actually work to Doom Patrol’s favour.

Conventional superhero films can often suffer from being a tad predictable – even to those who wouldn’t consider themselves avid fans. With Doom Patrol being so purposefully against these conventions, it’s sure to be an engaging viewing experience, and a continually surprising one.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
