Frank Miller: Ranking His Comics From Worst To Best

19. Holy Terror (2011)

Holy Terror is one of the most recent works from the Miller canon, and it's the latest in a long line of ventures clearly driven entirely by the writer/artist himself. The artwork is a return to the clunky, chunky Miller heroes of old, but the writing of Holy Terror descends into something more akin to a bigoted rant than an actual story. Originally conceived as Batman story - the title "Holy terror, Batman!" being taken from Burt Ward's classic exclamations - but as the story progressed Miller stated that Batman had less and less to do with it. Eventually the book became a tale of a new hero; The Fixer - who fights Al Qaeda. It may not be as bad as seeing Batman punch out insurgents, but whatever the book amounts to is undeniably infuriating. Comics legends like Alan Moore and Grant Morrison - who had by turns lauded and cited as influence to earlier works by Miller - responded with outrage at the mere notion of Holy Terror, an outrage - not a polite disagreement between professionals, but actual anger - and it's all something like the series could hope to fuel. Again, the artwork is okay. Some of the panels are very nearly vintage Miller€if only we could erase those damn word bubbles.
