Gotham Season 5: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Ruin'

Ups...

4. The Comedy

Victor Zsaz Gotham
Fox

There's little denying that Gotham has one of the greatest tones of any series currently on television. Known for its noir-ish landscapes and incredibly dark storylines, the hit Fox show has a very distinct feel. As a result, it can often be disturbing. In such an instance, however, the writers often employ a bit of comedy in an attempt to bring a little levity to the doom and gloom, utilising one of their more comedic characters to do so.

In several of these instances, Harvey Bullock the chosen character, but in this particular episode, viewers were blessed with the presence of the humorous Victor Zsasz. In the comic books, the character isn't known for his comedy value at all, which is perhaps why Gotham viewers find this iteration of the character is so hilarious.

The sharp script ensured that Zsasz was in fighting form, delivering punchline after punchline, and it all proved to be the perfect cure for this otherwise dark instalment of the Fox series. Zsasz's farewell scene with Jim Gordon had a certain finality about it, which perhaps suggests that this will be the last we'll see of the character. If so, then viewers will certainly miss him, but they'll never forget the laughs that he brought to the show over the years. Anthony Carrigan has truly been a revelation in this role.
