The latest instalment of Marvels Infinite Comics re-introducing their space-set franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy, to a new audience features the female of the team, Gamora. Gamora is a green skinned assassin, deadly with weapons and in hand-to-hand combat. Given the moniker The Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe - which Bendis maintains - her abilities include enhanced strength, speed, agility and a healing factor, all of which come into play in this comic as we see her take down numerous guards in a Badoon-run mining colony, freeing the slaves who run it. Shes the last surviving member of her race who were wiped out by the Badoon, at the behest of Thanos, the Mad Titan (glimpsed briefly in the after-credits sequence of The Avengers movie) who then adopted her. But, unsurprisingly!, the two dont get along and shes made it her goal in life to thwart her wicked stepfather and the Badoon every chance she gets. The comic, which takes place before Guardians of the Galaxy #1, touches on all these points though the issue is largely visual with little to read. But thats what makes this such an amazing issue. Michael Del Mundo, the artist, and Yves Bigerel, who does the layouts, have put together a comic that feels only part comic and mostly animation. Part of the brilliance of these Infinite Comics has been showcasing just how different they are from regular comics by changing little in the way of background and focusing on the movements of the characters in the panel, merging movements in a sequence that, if you tap fast enough, look like youre watching animation. Its a capacity thats worked well in the Drax and Rocket Raccoon issues but is perfectly suited to Gamoras action-centric issue. Its one thing to be told Gamora is Dangerous, etc., so this comic shows you how badass she is. From swordplay, to the swiftness of her attacks, to her healing factor, and her combat skills, the comic gives us her background briefly at the start and spends the rest of the comic showing us some brilliant action, introducing her character perfectly. This is another excellent addition to the Infinite Comics line and definitely worth downloading if youre interested in the Guardians of the Galaxy, especially if youre a new reader as this is an excellent introduction to this character.
