Remembering Norm Breyfogle: 5 Iconic Batman Moments

4. "Introduce A Little Anarachy..."

Batman Norm Breyfogle
DC Comics

Long before Heath Ledger's Joker showed an anarchist bent in 2008's The Dark Knight, Gotham had a different agent of chaos. Breyfogle and writer Alan Grant created Anarky in Detective Comics #608 in 1989 as a unique foil for Batman.

Anarky is a teenage prodigy named Lonnie Machin who has extreme anti-government philosophies. He endorsees anarchism to the point of being ready to use terrorist means to achieve his goals. He also had goals that could be considered noble such as environmentalism, which led to the character's increasingly popularity with readers. Treading the line between villain and anti-hero, he even got his own series for a brief time.

Today, Anarky endures in the comics and appears in a variety of different media. The character was the villain during the Beware The Batman animated series, and a live action version appeared on television's Arrow. Warner Bros. Montreal even included in the character in the Batman: Arkham Origins video game.
