Sam Wilson's Captain America: 10 Things Fans Need To Know

9. He Once Quit The Avengers

Sam Wilson Captain America
Marvel Comics

One time, a man named Henry Peter Gyrich tried to form a new group of Avengers. He wanted to check off all the boxes solely for the sake of looking diverse. It was a quota concept, and Gyrich ignored heroes of colors unless it benefited him. Not to be too political, but his motivation was not in the right place.

Sam Wilson is chosen as one of the members of this new team. Gyrich uses him as the token black superhero. When he discovers this, he immediately leaves the organization. Wilson believes in representation and wants his identity to play the proper role. He didn’t want to be a token box for Gyrich to check off his list.

This whole example is a big part of his character. Sam Wilson is a Captain America for every citizen of the United States. He stands by his values and aims to lift anyone suffering from oppression. Expect this trait to carry on in the films.
