Stan Lee's 20 Greatest Marvel Comics Creations

19. Ant-Man

Stan Lee Spider Man
Marvel Comics

This entry is focusing solely on the Hank Pym version, as Scott Lang and Eric O’Grady were created by David Michelinie & John and Robert Kirkman respectively. And while Paul Rudd’s Scott gets the limelight in the movies, there’s a strong argument to be made that Hank Pym is the most interesting of the lot.

For one, he’s the original. So without him (and without Stan Lee), we wouldn’t have the Lang or O’Grady versions today. He’s also a founding member of the Avengers, though he’s yet to meet them in the MCU. Like a lot of great characters (including a good chunk of this list), he’s got a developed personality with flaws and motivations.

His relationship with Wasp is sweet and endearing through most arcs, keeping him grounded. Although a particularly dark storyline decades ago did see him slap her.

In a world of cocky, bragadocious heroes, it’s nice to see someone buck that trend. Pym definitely acts superior on occasion, but also has an inferiority complex that comes out. For example, he only designed Giant Man because he felt inadequate compared to the likes of Thor. That’s the level of deep characterisation Lee’s best creations give you.
