Greg Rucka is always wonderful, so when it was announced that he'd pen the first of Marvel's Star Wars books in the build up to The Force Awakens, fans were understandably excited.

Others, however, were somewhat apprehensive. For decades, dozens of other writers, artists and designers had built up an Expanded Universe of their own, but here Marvel were to tear it all down and star anew. There were a lot of expectations to meet, but thankfully Rucka - perhaps unsurprisingly - managed to exceed them all.

Shattered Empire picks up in the immediate aftermath of the events of Return of the Jedi. An Imperial remnant persists despite the destruction of the Second Death Star, and Luke, Han and Leia are faced with the prospect of building something new, having spent the last decade tearing something horrid down.

Rucka and artist Marco Checchetto's book is the perfect entry point for fans looking to explore the new continuity, and even includes a story revolving around the parents of Poe Dameron. If you're at all curious to see what happened immediately after the credits started rolling on Episode VI, then this is the book for you.
