The Wicked + The Divine - 10 Most Shocking Twists

9. Baphomet “Kills” The Morrigan (Issue 2)

In her quest to get Lucifer out of prison Laura attended an underground Morrigan gig. This being WicDiv, the concert was literally underground, at a derelict London Underground station. Tension mounted as the comic’s visuals showed Laura going deeper and deeper beneath the earth. This was rather apt imagery as she was on her way to meet not one, but two gods of the underworld.

The crowd was waiting for The Morrigan to make her appearance when suddenly a suave, leather-clad figure appeared. Creating pyrotechnics with a click of his fingers, the mystery man identified himself as “the new king of the underground” and held up the bleeding, severed head of The Morrigan. Enter Baphomet.

Needless to say, The Morrigan wasn’t so easily defeated, and the next issue featured an epic battle of the underworld between the two gods - who readers would later learn were in a tumultuous relationship.

After setting up The Morrigan’s concert for several pages, it was quite a big move for the creators to immediately behead her, especially before it had been properly established that it would take more than this to stop the goddess and her alter egos. This exciting set piece was certainly an appropriate way to introduce some of the comic’s most bombastic and flamboyant characters.
