Venom: 10 Mistakes Sony Must Avoid With The Spider-Man Spin-Off

9. Over-reliance On CGI

We've nothing personal against Topher Grace, but his version of Venom in Spider-Man 3 bombed like one of the Green Goblin's pumpkin contraptions.

The That '70s Show star didn't have the chops to play a brooding psychopath like Eddie Brock, but that was merely a small part of the problem.

Spider-Man 3's biggest misstep here was its over-reliance on CGI. Decked out in full symbiote mode, there was nothing tangible or believable about Venom.

Granted, CG has come a long way in a short space of time - just look at some of the magic Marvel Studios themselves are weaving with it - but this writer is a firm believer in using it sparingly, alongside other FX forms.

This might prove tricky when it comes to Venom, given that Tom Hardy is going to spend a lot of the film in costume, but with the right creative team on side, there are ways the Spider-Man 3 pitfalls could be avoided.
