9 Terrible Franchise Killing Movies

2. Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance

The first Ghost Rider was awful, but somehow it still made a lot of money. For the sequel the studio brought in the guys who made Crank, and it was decided to make Spirit Of Vengence a semi-reboot that didn’t directly follow the original. Cage was brought back to play the cursed rider, and the stage was set for some awesome craziness.

Expect the movie was ultimately pretty flat, with the odd crazy setpiece or visual - how can you not Ghost Rider pissing fire? - livening up a weak story that was basically a rip-off of Terminator 2. The cast was clearly having fun, but the movie was ultimately a bit of a dud.

The muted reception to the sequel saw Cage walk away from the series, and the rights to the character were handed back to Marvel. Maybe they’ll give him a reboot somewhere down the road, but their schedule looks pretty crammed for the foreseeable future.
