Is anyone else hungry?

For fans of the Halloween season, the rest of the year is often torturous; with only a slow, depressing drip feed of genre films to quench us while we stare longingly at the oasis of releases usually reserved for Halloween. After all, a lot of high profile horror releases including instalments in the Insidious and Saw franchises, as well new seasons of Stranger Things and Channel Zero to name but a few are all slated for release this Halloween.

Luckily for horror fans however, the genre has had something of a renaissance in the past few years, not only seeing a marked increase in horror output, but an increase in the quality of that output. It could be that the rise of streaming services such as Netflix have uncovered a growing desire for horror content among viewers, or maybe franchises such as The Conjuring have brought the genre back to mainstream audiences.

Whatever the reason, it's always great to see filmmakers and audiences alike embrace horror the way we've been seeing recently, and there's a lot to be thankful for as horror fans even well before Halloween arrives...

10. Get Out

Universal Pictures

Officially slated for release in the UK on March 17th 2017, Get Out is one of the surprise hits of the year so far, currently holding a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This makes it one of only five films in the horror genre to do so; a feat made even more impressive when you consider that Get Out is the only film on the list with more than 100 reviews.

The film follows interracial couple Chris and Rose as Chris is introduced to her affluent parents for the first time. Needless to say, things soon start to get very strange as Chris realises there may be something very sinister going on at the family's estate.

This is the directorial debut of high-profile comedian Jordan Peele, who also penned the script, and the movie is getting a lot of love. If you're into smart horror with a comedic slant and something to say, then it looks like this could be the movie for you.
