Robin Williams is best known for his charming heroes, who tend to come with quirks. His Mrs Doubtfire had the whole assumed identity thing going on, his San in Good Will Hunting is broken by the ghosts of his past and his Genie in Aladdin is VERY in-your-face.

He also played one of culture's most enduring heroes in Peter Pan for Steven Spielberg's maddeningly maligned Hook, taking the beloved fairytale's childish beligerence and turning it into a corporate adult ignorance. At his heart though, he's still a hero of upstanding integrity and it's thanks to Williams' performance that we believe - and yearn for - his redemption.

At the other end of the scale, Williams also took the quirks of his other performances and stripped away the exuberance to play Seymour Parrish, the seemingly harmless photo developer, whose unassuming demeanour ends up being his most terrifying weapon. It's a completely unexpected performance by Williams, but it's absolutely one of his best.
