10 Amazing Costume Designs From Mediocre Films
8. The Gods - Gods Of Egypt
Not so much mediocre as it is just plain terrible, this bonkers fantasy film gained controversy for whitewashing its North African based mythology while also somehow being just an absolute mess of a film. But for all its many faults, the visuals in this film were a marvel to behold, most especially in the designs of both costumes and special effects when it came to its godly cast.
If judged by costumes alone, this film is a standout of the past few decades, with designs that look like they came straight out of a particularly artistically driven multi-billion dollar triple-A video game rather than a schlocky B-movie.
Costume designer Liz Keogh knew she was designing for gods and royalty in some far-off fantasy that only vaguely resembled Egypt, and she did not hold back at all, with gorgeous, complex metal and beadwork, memorable silhouettes from over-the-top yet elegant headdresses and armour, and design touchstones that did more to represent the culture at its most decadent and artful than any of its storytelling or casting ever could.
If only the film were even a sixteenth as good as merely one character's costume, it might have been a hit.
