10 Amazing Movies That Bombed At The Box Office

7. Mother!

The Iron Giant
Paramount

Budget: $30 million

Box Office: $44.5 million

Calling this particular movie strange would be an understatement, but it's also incredibly powerful and disturbing. Exactly what a psychological horror movie should be. At a distance, one could clearly see why audiences would be put off this movie. The promotional material gave absolutely nothing away about the plot, and shortly after release word got around that the movie was allegorical and also said a lot of things about environmentalism. Basically, it's one giant metaphor.

Upon release, mother! was extremely divisive. It remains one of less than twenty movies to ever recieve an F rating on CinemaScore. On the flip side, publications like The Guardian gave it a perfect rating, praising how effectively disturbing and outragerous the movie dared being.

Whether you love or hate the movie, you will not be bored. You may be confused, disgusted, offended or enthralled. This movie is an event, a one of a kind one at that.

Maybe down to perceived misleading advertisements or subject matter to controversial for the general public (we are dealing with religious allergory remember), mother underperformed heavily at the box office. However, with time it's very feasable that this will become a movie people talk about in years to come, and how under appreciated it was at the time of its release.
