10 Awesome Fan Theories That Improve The Back To The Future Movies

5. The DeLorean Breaks Down On Purpose To Prevent Paradoxes

Doc Brown specifically states on numerous occasions that paradoxes in time should be avoided at all costs (such as meeting different versions of yourself), as they could theoretically result in the destruction of the universe. And, according to one fan theory, it would seem that his DeLorean and its flux capacitor have minds of their own and go out of their way to prevent such paradoxes occurring. There are examples of this from all three movies were the time machine breaks down, causing events that potentially avoid dangerous paradoxes, but most prominently in the first. In Back To The Future, it breaks down in a place where it can easily be hid, so that nobody in 1955 sees such a futuristic vehicle and later fails to start just before the lightening strike - the delay means the car hits the wire at exactly the right time, almost as if it was compensating for an error in Doc Brown's calculations. Clever DeLorean!
