http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fWr6CBARMw Nobody should be surprised to see this one; Tony Scott's "classic" 80s action film helped enhance Tom Cruise's star status, but seems to be largely watched within an ironic context these days, given how awfully the film has aged. The movie about a gang of fighter pilots is basically a Michael Bay movie while Bay was still learning his craft; Tony Scott delivers the whole shebang with a sure earnestness that undeniably has its pleasures - namely some strong visuals and thrilling action sequences - though the film couldn't be anymore 80s if it tried. If it's not Berlin's classic Take My Breath Away, then it's the risible dialogue, the homo-eroticism of the whole thing, and the cheeseball characters. Though I can't speak for how the film was received upon release, I grew up with it as an action classic, and as an adult have come to admit that it's best watched with a tankard full of alcohol and some friends game for a laugh.
