10 Bad Comic Book Villains Who Were Still Better Than Steppenwolf
9. Dr Doom - Fantastic Four (2005)
Yes, he's one of the greatest comic book villains ever. Yes, the movies have spectacularly failed to do him justice thus far. But Julian McMahon's 2003 take on Victor Von Doom is still a better bad guy than Steppenwolf.
We can only ponder why it was deemed necessary to so radically rewrite Doom for the first blockbuster take on the Fantastic Four (let's agree not to count the infamous 1994 Roger Corman production).
But given that director Tim Story's film landed in cinemas only 3 years after Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, this version of the character - a narcissistic billionaire scientist who is radically altered in an experiment gone wrong, then seeks vengeance after being forced out of his own company - seems a painfully obvious rip-off of Norman Osborn.
Even so, Julian McMahon isn't a bad actor, and he certainly isn't any more badly miscast than Ioan Grufford and Jessica Alba as Reed Richards and Sue Storm: however, you have to give the first Fantastic Four this much, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis were ideal as Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm.
And, if nothing else, this take on the Fantastic Four - Doom included - is nowhere near as misconceived as the 2015 version.
