10. Ex Machina

One of the most audacious directorial debuts of the last decade, British or not, Alex Garland's Oscar-winning sci-fi thriller is a chilling, visually impeccable and superbly-acted film that confronts the now-familiar hand-wringing over AI run amok in thoroughly unique fashion.

Loaded with psychological subtext and slow-bled for maximum suspense, Ex Machina is the rarest of films that's both thoughtful and exciting, with Garland avoiding just about every pitfall you'd reasonably expect from a first-time filmmaker.

Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander are meanwhile completely electrifying, and ensure the film's uneasy tension never lets up. A modern classic sci-fi if there ever was one, and it didn't need a $100 million budget or veteran director to get the job done.
