We already knew from the movie's first official images that it would feature some distinct 1990s iconography in order to cement its time and place, and literally the third shot in the trailer sees Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) crashing to Earth through the roof of a Blockbuster Video.
The joke, of course, is that almost nothing screams the 90s more than the video rental chain, but one has to wonder: could the movie's nostalgia-baiting end up more obnoxious and excessive than entertaining?
Sure, Marvel has a strong track record with tonal balance, but given how powerful the allure of nostalgia is these days, there's definitely some concern that the movie might play the hard-sell a little too aggressively with all the period pop-culture references.
