10 Biggest Movie Controversies Of 2018

9. A Lesson In Colonialism - Black Panther

One of Black Panther's most memorable scenes is the audience's introduction to villain Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who shows up at a London museum to educate the staff on their colonialist spoils and, ahem, liberate them of their ill-acquired goods.

It's no secret that prosperous nations have pilfered goods from slain tribes worldwide and put them on display for centuries while refusing to return them to their nations of origin, but what better than a mega-successful superhero movie to convey that message to a huge, global audience?

The scene sparked passionate debate online about the responsibility of museums to return stolen artefacts and cultural iconography to its rightful owners, with many calling for museums worldwide to rectify this issue. Unsurprisingly, though, the museums have mostly kept pretty quiet on the matter.

With Black Panther now nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, however, it doesn't look like this is going to die down any time soon.
