10 Biggest Movie Tropes Of 2015

10. Disney Seemed Really Convinced That A CGI Alien Who Doesn't Get Out Of His Chair Is The Most Threatening Of Villains

Seen in: Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Star Wars: The Force Awakens From Shere Khan to Scar, Maleficent to, well, Maleficent again, Disney has been behind some of the most iconic and successful villains in movie history, but now that they've become responsible for all of your favourite franchises, they seem to have settled on a less than thrilling model for the future. Through their ever-expanding set of cinematic subsidiaries, the Mouse House brought us two of 2015's highest grossing movies, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Neither movie was short on excitement and both gave our heroes a pretty decent antagonist to face off against, but in both cases there was a bigger villain lurking in the background, manipulating events and yet never taking part in them (even if they could wipe out the heroes with the slightest bit of effort). Both Star Wars' Supreme Leader Snoke and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Thanos are clearly intended to be the entire franchise's Big Bad, the thing that everything is building up to. But in both cases, the need to hold their awesome power back for later sequels just made them seem irrelevant and unthreatening. Neither character can be bothered to be in anything like the same physical environment as the protagonists, or even get out of their chair. It doesn't help, either, that both are cheap looking CGI creatures that lack the impressive design of the characters that are clearly supposed to be their subordinates. At least, after three movies, Thanos finally decided right at the end of Age Of Ultron to "do it himself". Now we just have to wait a couple more years to see what that vague threat actually means!
