It's been a bit of a tough week for movie, TV, and entertainment fans, as not only was it a slow news week in general, but we also lost two incredible Hollywood legends. Lauren Bacall and Robin Williams both passed away, and left behind incredible legacies that we'll talk about a bit later on. In other news, we have several studios playing Release Date Jamboree and announcing openings for upcoming films and franchise sequels, we have word on the future of Damon Lindelof and HBO's controversial new series The Leftovers, updates on Marvel's The Inhumans and DC's Aquaman, and a glimmer of hope that Michael Bay might finally move on from the moneymaking machines known as the Transformers franchise. 10. Godzilla 2, Power Rangers, TMNT 2 Release Dates
Plenty of release dates were announced this week. Some were for new films, some were release date shuffles and delays. Sony moved a few things around, as they moved the Brad Pitt World War II pic Fury away from the Steve Carell/Channing Tatum sports flick Foxcatcher. Rather than opening in November, it will hit theaters a bit earlier on October 24th. They also shifted the release date of the Adam Sander/Peter Dinklage action comedy Pixels from May 15, 2015 to July 24, 2015. Other studios were busy shifting films around as well, as Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures revealed that Gareth Edwards' Godzilla sequel will roar into theaters on June 8, 2018, which should give the director ample time to make his Star Wars spin-off film, which is slated for release sometime in 2016. Lionsgate joined the fray by giving their upcoming Power Rangers reboot (from executive producer Roberto Orci and X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz) a July 22, 2016 release date. That puts the film in an extremely crowded month, sandwiched between Bourne 5 a week earlier and Planet of the Apes 3 a week later. It also shares that June 22 date with Guy Ritchie and Warner Bros.' King Arthur, making Power Rangers a nice bit of counter-programming that weekend. And finally we have Paramount, who were overjoyed by the $65 million opening of their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, and quickly greenlit a sequel for June 3, 2016. Think that's crazy? Don't even get us started on the upcoming superhero films slated for release over the next four years...
