10 Biggest Movie and TV News This Week (Jan 11)

After a particularly slow couple of weeks as far as movie and television news go, things have slowly begun moving forward again. This week may be lacking any big casting announcements or official details for anticipated projects, but we got plenty of smaller-scale news to chew on as well as some speculation that sent fanboys reeling with anger and frustration. A few upcoming TV projects, like Fox's Gotham series and NBC's Rosemary's Baby miniseries, received directors and stars, while Marvel gave some more juicy details about their upcoming One-Shot. On the DC side of things, speculation about a big change in Wonder Woman's origin sent comic book fans into a frenzy. And last but certainly not least, we received word about an intriguing casting rumor regarding a little movie franchise that takes place in a galaxy far, far away. All of this and more in this week's WhatCulture news brief! Let's get started, shall we?

10. Gotham TV Pilot Gets Director

Gotham DC may be a bit late to the party when it comes to bringing their characters to the big screen, but you can't deny that they've got the lead on Marvel when it comes to television. Sure, Marvel's got Agents of SHIELD, but that show can't hold a candle to Arrow. Later this year DC/WB hope to expand that Arrow universe with a Flash spinoff, and have several other television shows in the works including Constantine, Hourman, and most interestingly, a Gotham show starring a young(er) Jim Gordon. Gotham is being written and created by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist), and we still don't know much about it other than that it will air on FOX. We've heard that they're casting a ten year-old Bruce Wayne and that the show may start by having Gordon investigate the famous double homicide of Thomas and Martha Wayne. As of right now we still don't know when the show will air or who will star, but earlier this week we got word that TV veteran Danny Cannon will helm the pilot. Cannon directed the 1995 Judge Dredd film starring Sylvester Stallone, but has a large television resume that includes shows like CSI, Alcatraz, Nikita, and The Tomorrow People. Besides casting announcements and plot details, fans are curious where the show will fall in terms of the DC cinematic universe. Chances are it won't be tied to Arrow or The Flash (since they air on a different network), but it still could be linked to the films. Since the show's about a younger version of Gordon, and since Batman isn't going to appear, we'll just have to see how valid that idea is as well.
