The next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel is a prequel set in the 1990s. By stepping back in time, the movie has a chance to bring back dead characters, and it's set to do just that: Agent Phil Coulson, Ronan The Accuser, and Korath the Pursuer are all confirmed to return.

The movie will have a very SHIELD-centric plot - a younger, two-eyed version of Nick Fury will feature prominently - and as a result, many fans are expecting Hayley Atwell's Agent Peggy Carter to make a return. Unfortunately, Marvel has not yet confirmed such an appearance, with Atwell's involvement remaining firmly in the rumour category until we learn more.

It's not just the movie's plot and time period that has drummed up whispers of an Agent Carter appearance, either. In 2017, Atwell visited the Marvel offices and took a few photographs with MCU executive producer Louis D'Esposito. Around this time, Captain Marvel was in pre-production, so there's a good chance the pair had met up to discuss scheduling, or the nature of the role itself.

And here's the kicker: D'Esposito was the man who directed the Agent Carter One-Shot in 2013, which then led to the character getting her own TV series (of which he directed the pilot). D'Esposito is Marvel's "Peggy Carter" guy, if you will, and with the actress flat-out denying any involvement in Avengers 4 (but not doing the same for Captain Marvel), it wouldn't be terribly surprising to see her pop-up in the film given its story and setting.
