10 Biggest WTF Moments From This Year's Summer Films

The original Mamma Mia! film was released all the way back in 2008, a full decade ago, and is a ragged little film. It's an admittedly fun time thanks to the incredibly game cast and the undeniably infectious soundtrack of ABBA's music but it isn't exactly a great film.

So making a sequel ten years later felt like a real stretch. The biggest ABBA hits had already been used, the first film wasn't great to begin with, and the sequel had the Herculean task of finding an actress capable of replacing twenty-one-time Academy Award nominee, Meryl Streep.

It's a WTF moment in-and-of-itself that Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a genuinely great film, turning all of those perceived weaknesses into strengths and even drawing positive comparisons to The Godfather Part II along the way. But the biggest WTF moment comes in the form of the realization that Lily James bests Meryl Streep at her own game.

Playing a younger version of Streep's character, Donna, Ms. James delivers a tour de force performance. She exudes charisma, is the beating heart of the film, and delivers a monologue that is absolutely Academy Award-worthy.

Admittedly, James gets a much more emotional role and narrative to sink her teeth into than Streep did in the first film, but the fact still stands. Lily James manages to not only fill Streep's bedazzled shoes, she busts right out of them.
